The medal was instituted by King Wilhelm II on 19 July 1913 by amendment to the award in buckle form (Schnalle) created on 16 March 1874

Size is approximately US 7-7/14 (56-58cm)

Designed by the American Canadian Robert Tait McKenzie (1867 1938) this sculpture depicts Private David E. Cunningham of Canada's 4th Battalion of The Seaforth Highlanders of Canada.
